In Conversation with Nicole Langelier, Creative Director & Founder of Design + Diplomacy

Partners in both business and life, Nicole Langelier and Tim Gauci are the creative force behind Design + Diplomacy (D+D). The duo met 17 years ago at an Italian language school in southern Italy and have since combined their distinct skills—Nicole’s design expertise and Tim’s diplomatic and business acumen—to carve out a unique space in Melbourne’s property market.

Nicole, a double-degree interior designer (Parsons NYC and Domus Academy – Milan), hails from New York and has honed her craft across multiple design disciplines, from interiors and furniture to photographic and property styling. Tim, on the other hand, is a former senior diplomat with a wealth of experience in international business, investment, and marketing consulting. Together, they bring a refined yet approachable touch to every project they take on.

We sat down with Nicole to discuss her design philosophy, approach to colour, lighting, and her love for the Cambio range.

How would you describe your role as a designer?

To act as an interpreter for my clients. Everyone has an idea of what their style is, but most people struggle to articulate it. My role is to speak their language, read between the lines, and make it happen.

What does great design look like to you?

Anyone can have great designit’s not about money, it’s about thinking outside the box, taking risks, and being creative.

What's your approach to colour in design?

Don’t be afraid. White is safe but have a bit of fun—you only live once, and nothing is permanent!

What do you love most about the Cambio range and how do you like to style it?

It’s all in the name—Cambio is Italian for change, so I love the flexibility of being able to come up with something on the go to best suit the space. Even though I will always have something in mind, it’s empowering to be able to do something as simple as invert a shade and create a completely different look and light output.

What's your approach to lighting in your designs?

The more, the better! Lighting has the power to completely transform a space. You could have the same room, turn on or off some or all lights, and create a totally different atmosphere.

Whether it's pushing boundaries with colour, embracing the transformative power of lighting, or celebrating versatility with the Cambio range, Nicole’s design philosophy is all about making bold yet thoughtful choices. And, as she reminds us, nothing is permanent—so why not take a risk and have some fun along the way?
