Building with BuildHer Podcast – Jodie Meier

In the latest Building with BuildHer Collective podcast episode - "How to Elevate Your Lighting Game with About Space," host Rebeka Morgan engages in a comprehensive discussion with Senior Lighting Designer, Jodie Meier, focusing on the pivotal role of lighting in home design.

Jodie emphasises that effective lighting transcends mere fixture selection; it's integral to crafting mood, balance, and functionality within a space. She advocates for a layered lighting approach, combining task, ambient, and feature lighting to cultivate warmth and invitation in a home. This strategy aligns with expert recommendations to layer lighting sources for balance and flexibility.

A notable point of discussion is the debate between warm and cool lighting. Jodie advises that the choice between the two significantly influences a room's atmosphere, with warm lighting often preferred for creating cosy environments. This perspective is consistent with design principles that suggest using warm light bulbs to enhance ambiance.

The conversation also addresses common pitfalls, such as the excessive use of downlights, which can lead to monotonous and uninviting spaces. Instead, Jodie recommends incorporating diverse lighting types to add depth and interest, a sentiment echoed by design experts who caution against relying solely on overhead fixtures.

Jodie underscores the importance of early planning in the lighting design process. Engaging a lighting designer from the project's inception can prevent costly adjustments later and ensure that lighting complements the overall design seamlessly. She suggests budgeting approximately $10,000 to $20,000 for new builds and around $10,000 for renovations to achieve optimal lighting outcomes.

An often-overlooked area in lighting design is the hallway. Jodie points out that hallways present unique opportunities for creative lighting solutions, transforming transitional spaces into captivating elements of the home. This approach aligns with expert advice to light every corner, ensuring functionality and aesthetic appeal throughout the space.

This episode offers valuable insights into the nuanced art of lighting design. By considering both functionality and aesthetics, planning meticulously, and embracing a layered lighting strategy, homeowners can significantly enhance the ambiance and usability of their spaces.
