As we celebrate 15 incredible years of About Space Lighting, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the journey that brought us here. From our humble beginnings on the vibrant streets of Fitzroy to becoming a trusted name in innovative lighting design across Australia, it’s been a story of bold ideas, creative breakthroughs, and unwavering passion. 2014

Sydney Showroom

In 2016, we took the bold step by opening our first interstate showroom in Sydney - Alexandria, a vibrant hub for design and creativity. Funnily enough, that first showroom was just two doors down from where we are today! As our vision expanded, so did our space, leading to a move to Botany Road in 2016 to better serve our growing clientele. However, in 2021, we returned to O’Riordan Street, settling into The O’Riordan Collective that perfectly captures the energy and innovation of About Space Lighting.

 

 

2015

Brigit Heller

At About Space, we have strong ties to the local design community and believe in the powerful fusion of art and light. Our platform has always been a space to celebrate and elevate the creativity of local artists and designers, giving them the opportunity to showcase their work in new and exciting ways. One of our earliest and most inspiring collaborations was with local artist Brigit Heller, whose sculptural works caught the eye of our founder, Mark. Her innovative approach to form and texture sparked a creative partnership, leading to the first of many collaborations that continue to inspire and shape our designs today. Through these collaborations, we’re able to honor the intersection of art and lighting, creating pieces that are as much about expression as they are about illumination.

 

2016

St Kilda Showroom

In 2016, About Space Lighting expanded its presence in Melbourne with the opening of our second showroom in the vibrant suburb of St Kilda. Known for its eclectic atmosphere and artistic flair, St Kilda was the perfect location to showcase our innovative lighting designs to the local creative community. With its blend of coastal charm and urban energy, St Kilda allowed About Space to connect with a broader audience, further solidifying our commitment to bringing beautiful, functional lighting to every corner of Melbourne.

 

2017

Lunar Ceiling

Introduced in 2017, the Lunar Ceiling Light quickly became one of the most popular and enduring fixtures in the About Space range. Originally favoured for its adjustable functionality in task-oriented or industrial-style designs, it was ideal for spaces where flexible lighting was crucial—whether for reading, cooking, or working. However, as design trends evolved, the Lunar Ceiling Light found its place in a broader array of interiors. With the rise of minimalist and functional design, homeowners and designers alike began seeking versatile lighting solutions that blend seamlessly into modern, stylish spaces.

Caroline Pendant

The Caroline Pendant, designed by the in-house team at About Space in 2018, is a true reflection of our passion for blending art and nature in lighting design. Created through a series of thoughtful sketches, the pendant artfully showcases the gentle curvature of natural forms, drawing inspiration from the beauty of the natural world. Its organic elegance quickly captured the attention of both designers and homeowners, leading to the evolution of the Caroline Duo and a range of colour variations to suit diverse spaces. With its distinctive, flowing design, the Caroline has become arguably one of About Space's signature pieces.
