About: The Musk Stick Apartment

As Nicole Langelier, Creative Director and Founder of Design & Diplomacy would say “If Steampunk and Memphis had a lovechild, it might look like 183 Kerr Street, Fitzroy – otherwise known as The Musk Stick Apartment. A vibrant and unconventional masterpiece by Design & Diplomacy, this unique space reimagines industrial aesthetics with a playful, colour-infused twist.

Industrial Foundations with a Playful Edge

The Musk Stick Apartment stays true to its industrial heritage, embracing exposed beams, steel-frame windows, and soaring high ceilings. These robust elements form the perfect backdrop for an unexpected layering of bold colours, experimental materials, and striking geometric interventions. Copper tubing and exposed hardware amplify the industrial aesthetic, grounding the space in its original framework while setting the stage for an imaginative design narrative.

The Pink Cube – The Heart of the Home

At the core of this extraordinary space lies the pink cube—a bold and surprising feature that houses both the laundry and the bathroom. Acting as the apartment's "engine room," this eye-catching element defines the layout, creating clear zones within the open-plan design. The juxtaposition of industrial grit with playful vibrancy encapsulates the apartment’s dynamic personality.

Lighting as a Design Statement

Lighting plays a crucial role not only in function, but in tying the design together, and our Cambio shades with accord suspension were the perfect choice to enhance the space. Nicole shared that “their clustered style, customisation and colour configurations allowed for a seamless flow that was integral to the design.”

High Ceilings: The lighting design takes advantage of the vertical space, playing with varying heights to add depth and drama.

Flexibility: The adjustable nature of the lighting fixtures means the space can evolve with the client’s changing needs.

Personalisation: The client was actively involved in selecting and customising the fixtures, ensuring the final design felt both curated and personal.

A Space That Defies Convention

The Musk Stick Apartment is a testament to the power of design in transforming a space. By balancing industrial elements with bold colours and adaptable lighting, the result is a home that feels both structured and spontaneous—a place where form and function meet in the most unexpected ways.

The result is a space that is a shining example of how lighting can bring cohesion to a space, drawing together diverse elements into a harmonious whole. The interplay of industrial, Steampunk, and Memphis influences proves that sometimes, the boldest design choices create the most memorable spaces.
